What challenges did you have? How did you address them?
A challenge we faced today in the classroom was with the 1st graders. They came into the art space, there first time in the room this year so we went over some seating arrangements and rules in the art space. First we introduced the main project that they would work on: oil pastel and water color paintings that will act as the backdrops to their self portraits that they completed earlier in the day. On each day A-F we meet with a primary and an intermediate grade level class for 80 total minutes, which is an extensive amount of time to see a class. This is incredible because individuals and classes as a whole can achieve so much in one period. As teachers we have enough time to explain and have open conversations and students have the ability to truly dive into and complete their artwork. However, with this class in particular the assignment to create the backdrop for their portraits went by extremely quickly and students were looking for something new to do after a very short amount of time. Luckily, we did have other centres in the room for the students to explore and work on such as creating collages and sculptures with miscellaneous materials and a message center. In the future I need to thoroughly plan out how much time a project will take and have more options for students to work on when they finish the first assignment.

Today in 3rd and 2nd grade the students were able to continue their self portrait pieces. We transferred all of the original self portraits created with black ink onto acetate paper. Then we attached a white card stock paper in equal size behind the see through acetate. In each class we read the book The Colors of Us written by Karen Katz. The book tells the story of a mother (artist) and young daughter who plan to paint self portraits. The young daughter states that she is going to paint her skin tone in brown, but her artist mother explains that there are numerous shades of skin tone and the color brown. They go on a walk through their town and run into several people that they know who have all different shades brown. They described their skin tones with words such as cinnamon, coffee, peach, chocolate and more. Then the children, with one partner, were given red, yellow, black, and white paint. We demonstrated and then they began to physically mix the colours together onto the tops of each other's hands to match the colors to their skin tone. For some children this was a natural and enjoyable process; however, for others it was more challenging and frustrating to paint onto their partner's body or to get the right color mixing combination to match their skin. When they got the skin tone-ish color they painted onto the acetate paper with their black ink self portrait on it.

Today in the art space we worked with 5th grade and Kindergarten. With 5th grade we continued our beta fish needle felting project. The students had already create the body and head of their fish with various vibrant and pastel wools. They create shape and a base for the fish that today they were able to add fins, tails, gills, and eyes onto. We emphasized to the students the importance of safety with the needles, the importance of patience as they continuously poke the needle into the wool. We emphasized warm and cool colors, color combinations and planning what colors each different part of the fish would look like. They have numerous photos of beta fish as inspiration and to reference. The students create all different unique variations of tales, gills, fins, eyes, and more. Some students struggle more than others to successfully needle felt and create a tight wool fish. When the students are finished felting they are able to water color over the original black ink beta fish drawings they created.
In Kindergarten we set up the room with multiple stations. The floor is covered in all white paper for the children to come and create artwork on the ground with markers and materials. They are able to use their bodies and have freedom to move and play as individuals or with one another in an open space. In other parts of the room are 2D collage and 3D sculpture making materials. We emphasize to them using papers and materials with different transparencies, textures, densities, and colors. We reiterate how to use tape and scissors. We encourage them to tell stories with what they create.

What goals do you have for the following week?
- This week we will finish up the introductory units on self portraits with every grade level. They have all completed the marker outlines of their self portraits and they will move on to adding color. The intermediate students will work with color mixing. They will read a book about different color skin tones and have a conversation about how every individual has a different skin tone. This lesson will emphasize the social, cultural, and individual ideas that revolve around skin tone, in addition to teaching students how to mix colors and find/create the proper colors they wish to use in their artwork. All of the students will also create water-colour backgrounds for their self portraits. The classes will begin to complete this self portrait project in time for back-to-school night for parents and people in the community.
- Another more personal goal is to complete my Inventory project. I need to speak to a principal or someone in the administration to complete the project for answers to questions that Pam does not know. I also plan to complete my first lesson plan and begin my unit plan by Monday. Jody Guy will be coming in to observe me on Monday 11:45-1 to watch me teach a fourth grade class. I plan to do a unit plan with the third grade on the circus/movement/flying objects and a unit plan with the fourth grade on layering and the senses in art.
